Privacy Policy
Effective date: July 2026
NewsGauge ("the app," "we," "us") is a news app that groups articles about the same event and shows how outlets across the political spectrum cover it. This policy explains what data the app handles and the choices you have. NewsGauge has no accounts and no login.
The short version
- We do not record which stories or articles you read. Your reading history stays on your device and never leaves it.
- Your preferences (chosen sources and app settings) are saved only on your device.
- We collect limited, anonymous usage data to keep the app working, fix problems, and show ads.
- Nothing we collect is linked to your name, email, or identity.
What stays on your device
The following is stored locally on your device only, and never sent to us:
- Reading history: the stories you've opened, used to show your reading-balance insights.
- Selected news sources: the outlets you've chosen to follow.
- App preferences: theme, notification settings, and similar choices.
You can clear your reading history at any time in Settings. Uninstalling the app removes everything stored on your device.
What we collect
We do not maintain user accounts or personal profiles. The limited data we do process is anonymous and not tied to your identity:
- Anonymous usage information: general app activity, such as which features are used, so we can understand how the app is used in aggregate and improve it. This never includes which specific stories you read.
- Technical and diagnostic information: basic device and app information used to detect and fix crashes or errors.
- Advertising information: if ads are shown, limited information is used to display and measure them, as described below.
We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, contacts, photos, or precise location.
Notifications
If you enable notifications, we use them to deliver a daily digest. You can turn notifications off at any time in Settings or through your device's system settings.
Advertising
The app may show ads to support free access to the app. Showing and measuring ads involves limited, industry-standard advertising information (such as an advertising identifier and ad interaction data), which is not linked to your identity.
Where state law gives you the right to opt out of targeted advertising, we ask for your consent before showing personalized ads; if you decline, you'll still see ads, just not personalized ones. You can change this choice at any time via Settings → Ad Privacy Options, where available.
We do not sell your data.
Other services this app relies on
Like most apps, NewsGauge relies on standard third-party infrastructure to operate: for things like secure backend access, crash reporting, ad delivery, and displaying outlet logos. These providers may incidentally process limited technical information (such as your IP address) as part of delivering those services, but none of it is used by us to identify you personally.
When you open a news article, you leave the app and visit the publisher's own website or in-app browser, which is governed by that publisher's privacy policy, not ours.
Your controls
Because NewsGauge has no accounts and nothing we collect is linked to your identity, there's no personal profile to look up or delete on request. Instead, you have direct, self-service control:
- On-device data: clear your reading history any time via Settings → Clear Reading History; uninstalling the app removes everything else stored locally.
- Advertising identifier: reset or limit it any time through your device's system privacy settings.
- Ad personalization: change your consent for personalized ads any time via Settings → Ad Privacy Options, where available.
Anonymous usage and diagnostic data is collected automatically to keep the app running and does not currently have a separate in-app toggle; it is never linked to your identity and can be limited through your device's system-level privacy settings.
Data retention & security
The limited anonymous data we process is retained only as long as needed for the purposes described above. Data in transit is encrypted, and access to backend systems is restricted.
Children
NewsGauge is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy; material changes will be reflected by a new effective date at the top.
